Damn Am Canada - 2009

Posted by: Paul Rak |

Bonser Skatepark
Burnaby, B.C., Canada
Sept. 18-19, 2009

Last weekend Monster Energy teamed up with Billabong for the 2nd annual Canadian installment of Damn Am. This two-day event is part of a series of four contests held across the globe for amateur skaters. Consisting of a Bowl Jam, High Ollie contest and BBQ on day one and a Street Contest and Best Trick on day two, the Damn Am series has been a place for amateur skaters to get noticed.

The industry watches these events closely, and it's a great place for skaters to show what they can do, and have a great time doing it.

Day One - Bowl Jam and High Ollie Contest

A perfect Bowl Jam would be having Alex Chalmers as a guest judge and occasionally having him drop-in to show the skaters some lines. Well, that is exactly what happened. Alex is well known and respected in the skateboard world for his smooth and progressive bowl riding. Chalmers stoked the other skaters to get into the mood for the best trick jam. Highlights include Nathan LaCoste backside smith grinding at mach speeds and Adam Hopkins pulling off a trick on almost every corner and hip in the bowl, giving him the win.

Am Getting Paid Recap

Posted by: Jay Vaillancourt |

Montreal, Quebec

Am Getting Paid is the largest amateur skate contest in Canada and brings in riders from all over North America. In its 5th year, the event had a location change to Le Taz (a brand new indoor skate-park just outside of downtown Montreal).  The riders were super excited about the new course, some of them saying that, "it was like skating an X-Games course."

Monster Energy had our sample booth set up inside the park, where we sampled two pallets throughout the event to spectators and competitors.  Our V.I.P lounge was the place to hangout, with couches, food, and music for the riders to chill out between rounds. Out of the one hundred and thirty five skaters, Magnus Hanson (Vancouver, B.C.) nailed 1st, Manny Satiago (Massachusetts, USA) 2nd, and Micky Papa (Vancouver, B.C.) 3rd.

Summer End Skate Jam Recap

Posted by: Paul Rak |

Summer End Skate Jam
The Plaza Skatepark
Vancouver, B.C., Canada
September 12, 2009 For the 2nd summer in a row, Underworld Skate Shop teamed up with Monster Energy to present one of Vancouver’s only skateboard contest series of the summer.

The Summer End Skate Jam was the final event of the series and the none pressure jam format was enjoyed by all. The skaters moved from obstacle to obstacle throwing down their sickest tricks, and as best tricks were landed they were rewarded with cold hard cash.

With DJ Kutcorners playing great tunes, the Monster Energy Mobile Ambassador Team (M.A.T.) sampling to the thirsty skaters and the sun shinning, the day couldn’t get better. After the event, skaters and friends carried on to Shine Nightclub. There they celebrated their winnings in fine form as they partied to the late hours in the Monster Energy VIP area.

Standard Films Black Winter Premier Pumps Up 350 Heads in Calgary, Alberta

Posted by: Joanna Majcherkiewicz |

Yesterday evening Standard Films Black Winter debuted to a sold out audience of more than 350 people in the prairie city of Calgary, Alberta. People began to amass at The Plaza Theatre over an hour and half before the movie was set to begin and frantically tap the Steam Whistle beer and Monster Energy reserves. Albertans are savages; a reputation supported not only by their massive secret jumps but also by their massive bar tabs (it’s part of their appeal). Especially savage is Calgary’s weather. It might be ‘summer’ as you enter the theatre and ‘winter’ as you leave so it’s in your best interest to pay close attention to the movie and build that trick list because you might be snowboarding sooner than you thought.

Faces began to stream into the theatre and amongst the anticipation some of Canada’s finest riders could be seen shuffling into the theatre including Raewyn Reid, Dustin Craven and late arrival Leanne Pelosi. With a good sprinkling of celebrity athletes in attendance, and the sound of smuggled beers being uncomfortably opened, it was show time! Footage that really had people going was Monster Energy athlete Torstein Horgmo’s insane park follow-cam and Xavier Delerue’s savage rock lines. Chas Guldemond’s part was also one to soak up because he completed an entire video part in spite of spending most of his time at contests landing tricks with obscene rotations and gymnast precision (recall that Chas recently led the TTR World Tour by landing on the podium of almost every major slope style contest in the world). Monster Energy athlete Leanne Pelosi had some respectable rail representation and shares a section with always-colourful Andrew Geeves. There was also abundant avalanche footage in Black Winter, leading one to wonder if perhaps those close calls were the inspiration for the movie’s title.
