(Gopher Dunes, Courtland, July 19th)
Gopher Dunes is a sand track like no other. It has a global reputation for being one of the toughest tracks and conditioning is a must. This was very evident as the racers battled the roughest sand berms, woops, jumps and ruts. You would think getting a good start is the key at this track. It helps, but in no time you are dealing with lappers that constantly are filling your helmet with sand. This track has always mixed up the podium and this weekend was no exception.
With the weather holding out for us, Gopher Dunes hosted one of the largest crowds this season with 40 Coca Cola and Mac’s Convenience Stores partnering folks also in attendance.
MX2 - Leading Edge Kawasaki’s Teddy Maier finally pulled off his first overall win after a season of perseverance and placing on the tail end of the podium! Both of his motos had great starts that put him in the lead. Not only did he hold his position, Teddy ran away from the pack without a challenger in sight and is now leading the championship by 6 points! Teammate Brock Hoyer finished a well respected 7th and 8th giving him a 9th overall. Leading Edge is now looking forward to the next 4 stops and winning the MX2 Championship.
MX1 - Monster Energy Cernic’s Paul Carpenter had one of his toughest races this season. He crashed about 5 times in the first moto with one particularly nasty looking slam but Paul, being the fighter he is, charged on to an 11th finish. Second moto was a turn around for Paul. Being third across the holeshot he moved himself into 1st after a few laps and held it till the end giving him a 4th over all. His teammates Bobby Kiniry and Jack Carpenter also had some ups and downs. Bobby finished 8th and Jack 18th overall.
Next stop is in unfamiliar St-Thecle Quebec. This new stop on the tour is fresh ground for everyone to show off their skills.
